Game 9: College of William and Mary, Wednesday, December 6th, 7 PM, Atlantic10.com

Washingtonian

Hall of Famer
Unlike like last week, as far as I can tell, this game is not on CAA.TV.

This appears to be a premium game on atlantic10.com - so one would have to pay for it to watch it online.

W & M comes in with a 5-2 record, with the losses coming at High Point (100-66 and it was the first game of the season), and at Central Florida (75-64).

The schedule can be found here: http://www.tribeathletics.com/schedule.aspx?path=mbball

The stats are here: http://static.tribeathletics.com/custompages/files/mbb/2018/stats/teamcume.htm

Nathan Knight is averaging 19.3 PPG/8.9 RPG (8.2 PPG/4.4 RPG in 2016-17), Justin Pierce is averaging 15.4 PPG/9.6 RPG (3.7 PPG/2.0 RPG in 2016-17), Matt Milon is averaging 14.0 PPG, Connor Burchfield is averaging 13.9 PPG and David Cohn is averaging 10.9 PPG.

W & M is shooting 48.1% on 3 pointers (90-187), which is #1 in the nation (Division I) according to this: http://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/152

W & M is shooting a 51.2% on field goals, which is 17th in Division I. http://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/148

The message board for W & M is here: http://csnbbs.com/thread-836155.html

This is the beginning of a 5 game home stretch which is rare for us in the pre-season.

W&M - RPI 161
NCCU - RPI 339
Ga Southern - RPI 37
Penn State - RPI 73
Morgan State - RPI 149

Even if we somehow go 5-0 through this stretch, getting to 20 wins is still a daunting task that would be an amazing accomplishment for this team.

Otis looked absolutely exhausted at the end of the game at Auburn yesterday. He not only plays ridiculous minutes, but his minutes are highly active. His style of play takes an enormous amount of energy and with nobody to spell him, the context of those minutes are even more draining.

The kid is an absolute warrior, but he is human and with Kier regressing the past few weeks, it's only going to get worse for Otis.

But if anyone can pull through this, it's my man Otis.

This could be a bad loss considering W&M's 3 point offensive game which is Shaver's M-O. We haven't guarded the perimeter that well this season. Will be interesting to see how we adjust our defense as Paulsen usually likes to crowd the paint.

William and Mary's players make a stop at the Fredericksburg Cracker Barrel on the way to Fairfax. They all get food poisoning from the green bean casserole and can only suit 5 players 3 of them walk ons. Mason goes on to win 132 - 36.

William and Mary's only win worth anything was a 2 point win over ODU. They have beaten powerhouses Marshall, Hampton, Savannah St, Shenandoah Community College. They lost to UCF and 7 footer Tacko Fall... UCF lost to St Joes and scored 43 points.... They also lost to High Point who has only beaten 2 junior colleges other than William and Mary...

This game should be a fun one to watch since neither team really plays any perimeter defense.
Their best player is 6ft10 so hopefully our bigs can have a big game and stop second chance points. Greg and AJ are going to be important this game.

Tony Shaver = next coach at Richmond.

I love that a coach named "Shaver" has such a prominent mustache.

To me, this game really depends on how W&M gets open for 3. Is it a drive and dish scenario? Is it screens to get shooters open? Is it dump into the post and kick out when the team collapses into the paint (does Shaver still use the Princeton offense with lots of back door cuts)?

Also, if GMU shoots from 3 as well as they did against Auburn, W&M is toast.

Curious... has Shaver ever run anything besides a Princeton offense?

Kenpom has W&M looking good nationally. Of the 351 schools they are #5 overall for 3Pt %, #61 for 2pt% and #6 for FT%.

He is a good coach and his offense looks to be unsurprisingly efficient. If Mason's first half woes persist it it could be a problem.

While the Patriots showed some sac coming back at Aub after falling behind huge early, they still lost by 16 pts. to a football school. I'm concerned about this squad.

They, also, got a gift in Harrisonburg last week, they'll have to give it back on Wednesday at home.

The football school had football sized players. After taking the lead in the 2nd Auburn took advantage of this and scored like 8 straight points on 2nd chance tip ins. They ramped up their def and our players were gassed. That one guard hit 2 threes and Otis fouled him on the last 3 attempt. That where the 16 pts loss comes from. If we had just 1 big that could rebound against P5 forwards that game would have been completely different.

I read you, but it's still a 16 pt. loss to a low end P5 hoops program.

When Shaver was at Hampden-Sydney, they pressed full court and ran the fast break like you wouldn’t believe. Always scored in the 90s.

But when he got to W&M, he realized he would never be able to get the type of athletes who could compete in the CAA playing that style.

Bottom line, Tony is a terrific coach. His guys can really shoot it. Should be a high-scoring game both ways.
