Five offseason questions about the A-10

This and That

•Davidson's Jack Gibbs is a legitimate candidate for Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. The crafty point guard missed seven games in the middle of last season due to a knee injury, but was one of the main reasons why the Wildcats won the conference in Bob McKillop's first A-10 season. Gibbs averaged 16.2 points, 4.8 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals a year ago while shooting 47.9 percent from the field and 42.5 percent from three-point range.

•Looking for a breakout guy on George Washington? Try sophomore Paul Jorgenson. The 6-2 guard is bound to have his minutes increased following Kethan Savage's decision to transfer to Butler and has the confidence, temperament and basketball IQ to maximize his opportunity. Jorgenson averaged 3.6 points and shot 40.0 percent from three-point range last season as a freshman.

•Don't be shocked if La Salle's John Giannini reverts to four-guard sets this year featuring 6-5 Jordan Price at power forward. The Explorers went to the Sweet 16 in 2013 with a smaller lineup and while their perimeter quartet isn't as strong now as it was then, it's still formidable. Price, Cleon Roberts and sophomore guards Amar Stukes and Johnnie Shuler clearly look like four of La Salle's five best players and Giannini has always believed in putting his best guys on the floor regardless of position.

•Two names to learn quickly for UMass: Malik Hines and Rashaan Holloway. Both were partial qualifiers last season and both stand taller than 6-9. Hines and Holloway will join Tyler Bergantino and Texas A&M transfer Antwan Space as candidates to replace Maxie Esho and Cady Lalanne up front.

An interesting note on the hiring of both Dave Paulsen and Jeff Neubauer at George Mason and Fordham: Each coach has already led a program to the NCAA Tournament. Paulsen nearly led Bucknell to a win over Brad Stevens and Butler two years ago in the field of 68 while Neubauer and Eastern Kentucky were extremely competitive in a loss against Kansas in the Round of 64 in March of 2014.

A 10 Preseason First Team: Jack Gibbs (Davidson), E.C. Matthews (URI), D. Bembry (SJU), Dyshawn Pierre (Dayton), Hassan Martin (URI).

I would be curious to see why Shevon isn't on this list.

Because Rothstein is up Dan Hurley's butt and thinks URI is gonna win the A-10.

The guy is well known for playing favorites. If you're not one of them, forget getting any love from him.

Thompson (GMU) > Martin (URI), at least at this point of their careers. By the time Martin is a Senior, he may be a POY contender.

Paul Jorgenson looked like a guy that A10 fans will be complaining about for the next 3 years.

Got no issue with Martin making first team and Thompson not. Martin shot better from the field and blocked 2 more shots A GAME than Thompson. He's got a better all around game at this point. Thompson is still extremely raw and could have really used a redshirt season to be honest. Thanks Copes!

Notable newcomers

There are plenty of good players coming into the conference -- Iverson, McGlynn, B.J. Johnson (who comes to La Salle from Syracuse), Will Magarity (who joins Davidson from Boston College) -- but the real interest will come from the coaching ranks. Three new bosses take charge this season, two charged with resuscitating their programs and another with perhaps the tougher chore of staying the course.

George Mason turned to Dave Paulsen to help restore the luster for the Patriots, while Fordham handed the reins to Jeff Neubauer. Both come from winning situations -- Paulsen from Bucknell, Neubauer from Eastern Kentucky -- and both have won an NCAA tournament game already.

The most eyeballs, though, will be on Will Wade, the former vcu assistant who took over for his old boss, Shaka Smart. Wade did well as head coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga, 40-25 in two years, and already has wisely said he’s keeping the Rams’ "Havoc" in place.

If Shevon had the luxury of playing with EC Matthews and didn't have to do anything other than block shots and score off stick-backs, I think your opinion would be different.

Shevon regularly drew double teams because we didn't have anyone else to scare opposing defenses.

Throw in Hewitt's crapshow of an offense and it's pretty amazing he put up the numbers he did last season.

Shevon has alot to prove this year there's no question. Our poor shooting last year helped with his pts and rebs going up. If he can be a force down low while the teams scoring goes up, and thus wins, then he will have shown great strides.
