This and That
•Davidson's Jack Gibbs is a legitimate candidate for Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. The crafty point guard missed seven games in the middle of last season due to a knee injury, but was one of the main reasons why the Wildcats won the conference in Bob McKillop's first A-10 season. Gibbs averaged 16.2 points, 4.8 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals a year ago while shooting 47.9 percent from the field and 42.5 percent from three-point range.
•Looking for a breakout guy on George Washington? Try sophomore Paul Jorgenson. The 6-2 guard is bound to have his minutes increased following Kethan Savage's decision to transfer to Butler and has the confidence, temperament and basketball IQ to maximize his opportunity. Jorgenson averaged 3.6 points and shot 40.0 percent from three-point range last season as a freshman.
•Don't be shocked if La Salle's John Giannini reverts to four-guard sets this year featuring 6-5 Jordan Price at power forward. The Explorers went to the Sweet 16 in 2013 with a smaller lineup and while their perimeter quartet isn't as strong now as it was then, it's still formidable. Price, Cleon Roberts and sophomore guards Amar Stukes and Johnnie Shuler clearly look like four of La Salle's five best players and Giannini has always believed in putting his best guys on the floor regardless of position.
•Two names to learn quickly for UMass: Malik Hines and Rashaan Holloway. Both were partial qualifiers last season and both stand taller than 6-9. Hines and Holloway will join Tyler Bergantino and Texas A&M transfer Antwan Space as candidates to replace Maxie Esho and Cady Lalanne up front.
•An interesting note on the hiring of both Dave Paulsen and Jeff Neubauer at George Mason and Fordham: Each coach has already led a program to the NCAA Tournament. Paulsen nearly led Bucknell to a win over Brad Stevens and Butler two years ago in the field of 68 while Neubauer and Eastern Kentucky were extremely competitive in a loss against Kansas in the Round of 64 in March of 2014.
