Dave Paulsen is a bargain

Just saw that Will Wade got a raise and 8-year extension from vcu that bumps his salary from $1M to $1.4M next season, then $1.5M in 2017-18.

Mason now has twice the coach (at least) for half the price (literally).

All that's left now for Edwards and Cabrera is to do what it takes to keep him.

I support Paulsen as much as anybody but let's see how the next few years go first. If he does prove himself, yes, we better pony up this time.

I think I was the first guy here to be on board with Paulsen, but I also think it's too early to be making any long term judgements. I liked what I saw in his first season, but lets have him approach a winning record here before we call him twice the coach of anybody in conference.

(To be clear, I'm still VERY much on board with Paulsen, I just think it's easy to get ahead of ourselves because something looks better than the virus)

Ummm, you guys do realize that our coach was excellent long before he came to Mason, right?

DP has a track record of success long enough to choke a horse.

Given our roster limitations last season, the fact that he swept Mooney, split with both Wade and McKillop and nearly got one from Lonergan only further reinforces my belief that we have the right guy.

I found it ridiculous that vcu gave $1M to a guy who had been a head coach for just three seasons and had yet to qualify for the NCAA tournament.

Vanderbilt offer or not, I find it laughable that they're paying twice as much for a sideline drama queen as we're paying for a proven coach/teacher.

Next season is a big test for the roster, shifting from a post dominated team to a guard dominated team.

DP brings 400 career wins with a progressive ascent. I think this administration pulled off a steal. Plus, this is his first complete year if we want to be honest. I left this mess when PH arrived and I'm all in with where this is headed. Total program change.

Agreed, I'm just saying he hasn't won HERE yet, which bears keeping in mind.

I know there are exceptions to everything, but winners generally win.

DP has a system and philosophy that has proven to be successful everywhere he has gone.

If he doesn't win big at Mason, I would interpret that as there is something structurally deficient with our program -- be it financial resources, facilities, etc. -- that prevented him from maximizing his success here.

Now that Edwards is in charge and addressing many of the issues that were ignored under the prior administration, I believe DP and staff will have everything they need to build a program capable of competing annually for A-10 titles.

At a university with Mason's size, location and growing stature, there is really no excuse to do otherwise.

DP put the program on the right track. Sadly Alan Martin and Tom O'Connor are still laughing at the bargain they got out of ocm

"Post dominated team", that's a big stretch...

Not really. All of our experience was at the forward position. The one thing we consistently did well last season was out rebound almost every one of our opponents. We were most effective when we played inside-out and shot very few 3s.

Next season, the experience will shift to the back court with Otis, Jaire, Abram, and Moore all playing significant minutes last season. We also won't have a center, like Thompson, who is going to eat all the rebounds. Jenkins is going to be our 5, but he's not a 5 in the same way that Thompson was a 5.

Three of our top four scorers were guards. Marquise Moore and Otis were a hell of a lot more consistent than Shevon and Jenkins. There's a good chance we are better without Shevon on the court next season.

No offense to Shevon -- he worked his a** off for the program and didn't leave when things got tough -- but I think you're right because he wasn't an ideal fit for DP's style of play.

While he was obviously an unbelievable rebounder, there were too many other things he didn't really have the skill to do effectively. When teams double-teamed him, they were effectively able to take him away as an offensive weapon.

Jalen may not average double-figure rebounds next season, but he's a far more well-rounded player. Just a matter of keeping him out of foul trouble.

I don't think that's accurate. If we're better, it's because our guards got better, not because Shevon Thompson isn't on the team anymore.

This is my point: when Shevon Thompson was on the floor, teams had to adjust to him and play differently. He will not be there next season, and the emphasis will be on a perimeter game that was anything but consistent last year (let's not forget their woeful perimeter defense either).

This doesn't mean we'll necessarily be a better or worse team, but we are going to play differently because our forwards are, a, mostly are unproven players (Relvao, Temara, Dixon); and b, completely different types of players than Shevon was.

He was on team for, what, 2 whole years? Also, he must have known it was a disaster when he showed up.
