If this has already been posted, I apologize.

Anyone going to the Cancun Challenge? Never been myself but I am definitely going this year. Any advice on good deals or any other advice fellow board members can give me would be highly appreciated!

I am going with my wife. Thank you in advance!

In order of priority, I suggest:

Visit Chichen Itza (we rented a car and drove the 2 or so hours, or you can do a guided group tour). It's amazing and definitely earns it's wonder of the world label.

Go swimming in a Cenote

Visit downtown cancun, on the mainland, short bus ride away from touristy areas, find a local bar/restaurant for some food and drinks and try to go when they are having a festival:

Visit Isla Mujeres (short boat ferry from northern end of Cancun) and rent a golf cart to drive around the island. Golf carts sell out so make a reservation or get there early: https://www.google.com/maps/place/P...aacbc1c23543fb!8m2!3d21.1389963!4d-86.7693838

See a show at Coco Bongo (cheesy, and don't think it has changed since the 90's, but definitely entertaining)

Go down the slide at Señor Frogs (I think that is the place with the slide)

Cancun is GREAT! The dollar has cooled off a little bit, but it's historically the highest it's been in years and you get great value for it. Except in the airport where they gouge you.

If you have a car and fridge, would recommend getting your groceries from Selecto. It's like a Mexican Whole Foods but more fresh made and you can get legit Cubans.

Same thing if you have time - see the ruins, go swimming/snorkeling in a Cenote and spend time on the beaches which are some of the best white sand/clear blue water you'll find.

The Coco Bongo thing to me was too touristy but it's a check the box thing. Get a good steak and try some grilled octopus while you're there.

It's a tourist driven economy so they want you to be safe and not get mugged but it is still Mexico. Just be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine. I've never felt I'm in a dangerous situation down there.

I'm currently in Cancun, and checking the message boards from my honeymoon - dedication. We did the ruins at Tulum today. Definitely recommend that if Chichen Itza is out of anyone's reach.

Edit: definitely do a guided tour. Too many small details that are easily missed.

Holy Crap! And I am an Empirical History Major. I had no idea it was that close. Thank you!

No problem! Always happy to talk travel.

One night out in Clarendon I walked up to a girl at the bar, inebriated enough to approach her I asked her why she had a bucket of coronas and several tequila shots in front of her. She said she was prepping her liver for her trip to Mexico the next week. I had just returned from Mexico so I gave her all the same tips. Yada yada yada... 7 years later we made the baby in my profile pic ;)

New travel advisory issued for Mexico including Cancun, due to increased drug gang violence/turf wars - stay safe my friends!

Also be aware of the significant tainted alcohol problem - a large percentage (30%+ ?) of alcohol is produced illegally, so it's not just an isolated problem with specific resorts. There are major resorts that unknowingly, or negligently, are buying "illegal" alcohol.

Obviously stay safe everyone. But sometimes I'm cynical of these "travel advisories" seems like something easy the US can issue on countries we are frustrated with. It's a power move. Like Mexico if you don't do what we want we will issue a travel advisory which will greatly affect your tourism revenue.

I'm sure the announcers will greatly care about these two matchups on CBS Sports Network. I'm sure they'll be talking about the weather or something irrelevant the whole time. :crazytongue:

Do you have any evidence of that ever having been done by the state department? Do you think the state department made up the facts and stories that the advisory is based off of due to violent gang/drug related deaths? We need a SMH emoji
