ATLANTIC-10 2019-20 Home Attendance Summary

Per the statistics maintained by each team, George Mason University ranked 7th in the A-10 for 2019-20 average home attendance with a mark of 4,037 per game. Dayton, for what I believe to have been the case every year since it has joined, led the league with a mark of 13,364 this past season. St Joe's had the biggest change in attendance with a drop of near 43% providing evidence that a team's W/L performance is a big factor at the gate.

I’d imagine next year will dip down around 3850 if the product on the court doesn’t improve. Less than half capacity, with 25% of capacity blocked off for signage...

Yikes. You're right, odds are we are dipping below 4000 next year for the first time in at least 15 years. It frustrates me how much Home W/L record affects attendance. I wish we had more local fans that would show up no matter what.

We played Longwood on Friday, November 8th. Move that to Saturday, November 9th. The average highs in early November for Fairfax are in the low 60s/high 50s, compared to high 40s in mid-late February (source Weather.com). That doesnt mean you can't get a shitty day in November or a great one in February, but the odds are better in November.

November 9th is close enough to when other schools are holding homecoming. Maryland held their homecoming on Saturday, November 2nd (played Michigan).

Our season isnt in the shitter by then. We are probably going to schedule a cupcake to open the season; schedule another for the 2nd game. Homecoming isnt really about who we are playing, its about the experience.

A great experience could prompt ticket sales to future games. By my count, we had 14 more home games after the Longwood game. I'd have to imagine some of those Homecoming-only folks may buy tickets for a future game; give them an offer.

By the time we got to homecoming this year, we were in the PIG and had only 2 games left. Not a very attractive proposition. We had more people show up the week prior than we did at homecoming.

Why not give it a try? IMO, its low risk given where we are at.

Games against good teams already draw crowds, id like to see us win a homecoming. If we are going to get home and homes with teams like UVA they are going to be packed house whether it’s homecoming or not.

With the P5 leagues and Big East going to 20 game conference schedules and participating in league challenges against one another, there will be fewer remaining OOC games for their members. Furthermore they have rigged the NCAA selection process so that they really do not need to play teams from leagues such as the A-10, AAC, MWC, etc...It actually teams in the P5 and Big East not palying teams from other leagues as it makes it even harder for non power conference teams to make the NCAA Tournament. You can therefore pretty much drop the idea of getting many big OOC names to visit.

Yeah bad wording on my end, I want a guaranteed win from homecoming every year, no questions asked. I think big name teams will draw a crowd regardless and don’t need to be on the same day as homecoming.

An interesting story from back in the old days of Mason basketball. My senior year (84-85) we played in the UAB classic (I was the manager at the time.) The local sports writer in Birmingham wrote an article and called the tournament the "Cupcake Classic" to give UAB two wins in the season (UAB was coached by Gene Bartlow at the time.) We actually won the tournament beating UAB in the finals. The trainer and I at the time were tempted to send a box of Hostess Cupcakes to the sports writer.
