I didn't think Marquise was going to win but not even getting first team hurts. At the end of the day POY is an award for guys who light up the box score and no one has averaged 18/8/6 in conference like Cline did going back the past 25 years.
I don't really have a problem with Gibbs on the first team. I would have put him on the second team but it's Jequan Lewis and Scoochie Smith that are the really egregious inclusions.
Marquise has Jequan Lewis beat in points, rebounds, blocks, usage, and scoring efficiency, and mostly by a wide margin. Lewis has him beat by one assist per game and half a steal per game, but his team also leads in the standings which is probably most of it.
Scoochie Smith had the third highest usage rating *on his own team* and Cooke/Davis are better defenders at the guard position. Would have rather seen Kendall Pollard or Charles Cooke from Dayton on the first team instead of Smith.
Leaving Marquise off for these two guys is crazy.
Edit: shameless plug of final POY watch breakdown. I compiled all important stats for all relevant players here:
