1. 5 players use all of their eligibility
2. 2 incoming freshmen
3. 3 open scholarship spots

4) which underclassmen leave?

IMO -
1) minimum of 3 incoming transfers
2) another Big if either of the current 2 leave
3) need a pure point guard
4) need a pure shooter
5) need a shutdown defensive forward/wing

My guess, and it's 100% a guess based on gut feelings and NO inside information of any kind.
Gio - goes
Jalen - goes
Stas - stays
Ball - stays
O'Connor - stays
Cokley - goes
Begg - stays/goes - how's that for being noncommittal?
Quigley - already gone

I don't think any of these are candidates for farting the fight song if the opposite happens lol

Agree on all but Cokley. He has a path to playing time — if he’s recruited over and not in the rotation next season I can see him leaving, but not before that.

Haynes will stay. Maybe not because he wants to necessarily but from what I have heard, his academics are um…difficult to overcome at the moment. BOC and Begg are a toss up.

If his academics are an issue the it won’t really matter if he stays or goes. He won’t be eligible to play anywhere in college, correct?

Can anyone shed any light on this?

This has been an ongoing issue, it’s interesting it’s coming to light now in the public. I guess the conspiracies can be put to bed now.

However this has to do more with credits transferring etc and other schools not wanting to deal with it more so than him being ineligible academically at Mason next year.

Mason worked hard with him and the school and staff deserve a lot of credit, Tony and his staff put in the work.

Yeah exactly this. I realize my Pre coffee brain made it seem more like he was failing then credits being difficult for him to bring to other schools. They can completely derail a transfer more than grades can which is wild

Monday is exit interview day for the players, we should have some information soon after that.

I hope they have all looked at and understand the transfer market

1) The top 100 players in the transfer pool will get offers and likely move to P5 programs and get relatively large NIL payments
Haynes may be the only player on this team capable of achieving that.

2) Most successful transfers from GMU have transferred down a level. I assume they all got scholarships, and I have no idea of their NIL packages. Keyshawn Hall may be the exception, but i don't believe there is no one of that talent level on the team.

3) By my count, more than 1000 players entered the transfer portal and didn't get picked up. Most of these students lost scholarships and face an uncertain college future, and I hope are still attending college somewhere - on regular financial aid.

4) Probably more important, are the pool of student-athletes that we are looking to join GMU. By my count - 3 as a minimum - plus the slots given up by those who transfer out. I don't know if there are players currently on the GMU roster who will be forced out.

To be eligible as a 5th year senior, he will need to satisfy the following George Mason requirements -

"Fifth Year (9th term)

• Registered for at least 12 credits in declared degree program
• Must have earned at least 18 credits the previous academic year
• Must have earned at least 6 credits during the previous term
• Must have declared a major with an identified concentration (if applicable)
• 2.0 Cumulative GPA
• 80% of degree (typically 96 credits) must be completed."

Alright a run down on my predictions of who stays/goes and potential targets.

As is well known we have 5 seniors who do not have any eligibility yet. Two of those spots are being taken by incoming freshmen in Devin Booker and Emmanuel Kanga. Kanga in particular I expect to see genuine minutes from pretty quickly in the season.

But that leaves us with 8 players who could in theory come back next year. Of those 8 here’s what I think will happen:
Quigley: Became PG4 pretty quickly and basically didn’t play from post Thanksgiving on. Hes not coming back.
Stas: Staff like him, as long as he’s happy here and comfortable with his role, very hard to see him leaving.
Cokely: Maybe the wildcard since he’s both a true Frosh and didn’t see the ball like Begg did this year. I think he stays with more space available at the 2 and 3 next year, but I wouldn’t be necessarily shocked if he leaves for greater opportunity somewhere.
Begg: I can see a situation where Begg, who was an Ekanam recruit, want to transfer to a similar level closer to home. But, if we’ve made him comfortable there is a very clear opportunity for him to get more playing time next year. At the moment, I believe he stays.
Ball: Got super sick at the worst possible time of the season and understandably redshirted, especially with the depth we had at the wings last year. Seems to love it here, but again, would understand if he decides to transfer for a more certain opportunity. 50/50, I’m not leaning any one way at this point.
Haynes: As I said on another thread, I don’t think our competition is as much a P4/5 school as much as it is opportunities in Europe with Haynes. Issues with transferring again are real and it’s likely much much easier for him to stay here if he wants to stay in college for one last year. We’ll see where this goes, but at the moment… I think he’s a patriot again next year.
BOC: Could be in a lead role next year and a leader. Staff likes him. Don’t think he’d get much better opportunities elsewhere. Pretty confident he’s a Patriot again (and possibly a captain)
Gio: This is the only player that’s been mentioned in the acclaimed Trilly Donovan discord as a player who will enter the portal. Would be stunned if he stays, especially if Haynes sticks around and Kanga coming in. Probably the player the fan base had the most frustration with by the end of the season who was getting consistent time. IMO- gone.

Early targets to watch:
Deshawn Harris-Smith: Highly touted out of PVI, he’s seen his playing time significant decrease this season in particular. Tony was his main recruiter when he was an assistant at UMD and Lamar coached him at PVI. High defensive motor, I’ve heard if he does transfer he wants to stay local. Definite target that will be at the top of our list.

Quinton Mincey: Talented wing originally from Upper Marlboro from UMass Lowell who is applying for a hardship waiver. His advisor has said he’s heard from us. Likely connections to Coach Hinnant.

Martin Somerville: Another UMass Lowell transfer who was really solid as a freshman this year for them. We were looking at him, but passed for Begg. But connections are there and as a local kid himself, would be shocked if we weren’t targeting him.

Baraka Okojie: Yea wouldn’t this be something. Relationship is still there and if he transfers there seems to be interest in returning. May need to rebuild confidence after Penny buried him as the 8th/9th man this year.
