Shevon Thompson joins New Orleans Pelicans for Las Vegas summer league

Shevon Thompson will play for the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans in the Las Vegas Summer League next month, joining Pelicans draft picks Buddy Hield (Oklahoma) and Chieck Diallo (Kansas), as well as nine other NBA hopefuls. The 6’11” center and his teammates are guaranteed at least five games against the 24-team field, with three preliminary games for seeding, plus playoff and consolation rounds.

While the former George Mason big man did not achieve his dream of being drafted into the NBA, the summer league offers an excellent opportunity to showcase his skills against other NBA players and in front of NBA coaches and scouts. Even if the Pelicans can’t find a roster spot for him, that exposure may lead to offers from other teams for the extremely talented rebounder.

Despite spending just two seasons in Fairfax, Thompson ranks twelfth in program history in total rebounds (680), and his 11.0 rebounds per game average is the program record, with no other players in double figures. The Jamaican had two of the top four single season rebounding totals in Patriots history. Meanwhile, his career field goal percentage of 56.5% is ranked 7th in team history (for a minimum of 300 attempts).

Once again, there will be more opportunities for Mason fans to watch Thompson in action, as ESPN will televise all 67 games from Las Vegas across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU and WatchESPN.  ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will broadcast 25 games, including all four quarterfinal games, both semifinal games and the Championship Game on Monday, July 18 at 9 p.m. ET, while the remainder will be streamed via ESPN3.
