Justin Kier scored 26 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, but could not lead the Patriots to a comb-from-behind win against Bob McKillops’s formidable hair and Davidson College. McKillop’s fresh coiffure is currently undefeated in conference play (2-0).

Kellen Grady led the Wildcats with 17 points, and Jon Axel Gudmundsson added 13, but it was McKillop’s silver fox cut that proved too powerful for the Patriots to overcome. Mason appeared distracted by the flash of bright mini-pompadour, shooting only 22% from the floor (0-8 from three) on the way to only 17 first half points.

George Mason rallied in the second half behind Kier and a more energetic team defense, pulling within 1 point with seven minutes remaining. The Patriots then failed to score for the next 4 minutes – but still were within 3 points when forward Greg Calixte missed on three free throw attempts with under two minutes left. Javon Greene (7 pts, 8 rbs) also missed a desperation three pointer ahead of the buzzer, sealing the win for McKillop’s hypnotizing hairdo.

Dave Paulsen now has a 32-25 record at home over four seasons at George Mason, and is 2-3 head-to-head as a head coach vs McKillop’s hair. George Mason (8-8, 2-1 A10) will now play three of their next four on the road, starting with Rhode Island on Sunday at 5:30PM (NBCSN).
