Losing Streak Over as Patriots Top Saint Louis

It had been nearly four weeks since George Mason experienced that winning feeling.

After a gut-wrenching overtime defeat at the hands of Davidson on Saturday, the Patriots (7-12, 2-5 A-10) left no doubt about their intentions on Thursday against Saint Louis – putting an end to a five-game losing skid with a 68-60 victory over the visiting Billikens.

A four-point Mason lead heading into halftime soon turned into a 12-point difference by the time four minutes of time had elapsed in the second half. That run would prove vital – as Saint Louis (9-11, 1-6 A-10) could only manage to cut the deficit to as little as five for the remainder of the contest.

While the Billikens failed to establish consistency shooting from the floor (41 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point territory), the main problem was Shevon Thompson.

The Mason center recorded his tenth double-double of the season. Following up on a stellar 15-point, 15-rebound performance against Davidson, the junior from Jamaica efficiently tallied 19 points on 6-of-7 makes from the field while hauling in 15 boards. As a team, the Patriots held a 32-25 edge in the rebounding category.

Corey Edwards’ efforts also deserve recognition. He came into Thursday averaging 3.9 points per game, but scored a career-high 16 on the Billikens – including a three-pointer that capped the early second half spurt. Marquise Moore added 15 more to post back-to-back double-digit point showings.

These scoring totals seemed lofty after a slow start for both teams on offense – resulting in unwanted attention.

But both eventually picked up the pace – Mason especially – enough to reach respectable levels on offense. And by finally ending up on the right side of the scoreboard against a program that had won the past two Atlantic-10 Conference championships, Paul Hewitt and his players notched a ‘W’ for the first time since beating La Salle on Jan. 3.
