Looking to 2014: TeMarcus Blanton

Today we take our first look at one of the many prospect George Mason has been tracking for the 2014 class, TeMarcus Blanton.

Blanton is a 6’4 shooting guard from Luella High School in Locust Grove, Georgia. He’s currently playing for the Atlanta Xpress on the AAU circuit and had an outstanding performance last week at the Pitt Hoop Group Jam Fest. While Mason was one of the first to offer Blanton, his play has recently brought in offers from Mississippi, Ole’ Miss, and as of last night, Memphis.

Blanton is a player that can do it all – he can hit from outside, he can drive with the ball, and he can absorb contact to finish at the rim. He likes to play quick and get  out in transition.

“I try to model my game like Russell Westbrook,” Blanton said. “My style of play is up tempo and fast.”

While coaches are impressed with Blanton’s size and speed, he knows what he still needs to work on.

“I still feel as if I need to work on my shooting and ball handling to be prepared for the next level.”

Where Blanton might play at the next level is in question. If he continues to play like he did last weekend on the AAU circuit, Mason will have plenty of competition for his services. While the AAU schedule is a grind, he hopes to start taking some visits this summer.

“I do plan to visit schools (this summer). There are plenty schools I want to visit. George Mason is one I want to visit. I hope to make my decision by the end of the summer. My family, coaches, and I will sit down and evaluate which school is best for me.”

While Blanton is still unsure what other schools will make the cut for visits, he does know what he’s looking for in a program.

“I’m looking for is a close relationship with the coaches. I’m also looking to major in sports management or broadcasting.”

Blanton has mentioned that Mississippi and George Mason are currently recruiting him the hardest. With both Bryon Allen and Sherrod Wright graduating after next season, Mason needs to find a scoring threat who can drive with the ball and get minutes early. Blanton seems like one that can fit the bill.
