Patriots outlast Penn 80-77

Bryon Allen finished with 24 points and Patrick Holloway chipped in with 18 as George Mason outlasted a furious Penn comeback to beat the Quakers 80-77. GMU has built a 70-59 lead late in the second half, but Penn went on an 11-3 run to cut that lead to 80-77.

George Mason will begin its inaugural Atlantic 10 campaign next week by facing Virginia Commonwealth’s torrent of pressure, but if the lack of composure late in Thursday’s game against two-win Penn was any indication, the Patriots are in for a rude conference welcome.

In a blizzard of mistakes and missed free throws, they allowed an 11-point lead to almost entirely evaporate before surviving a potential tying shot for an 80-77 victory at Patriot Center.
