davidsonThe news came from Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated – that Davidson will announce tomorrow it will be joining the Atlantic 10. The move will effective for the 2014-15 season, meaning they will join the year after George Mason makes the move.

The addition of Davidson helps strengthen the A10. With the move, the conference will continue to be one of the premier basketball focused conferences in the NCAA. Davidson will be moving from the Southern Conference, where they made the NCAA’s five times over the past eight seasons. Included in that run is an elite eight appearance in 2008.

The Wildcats will become the Atlantic 10’s 14th member. However, there have been rumors for months that both St. Louis and Dayton might join the Big East after next season. If so, the league would still be stable at 12 teams. Davidson will help extend the A10’s footprint further south which could lead to future north/south divisions. Both College of Charleston and Siena have also been rumored as targets for the A10 conference.

We will have updates as more information gets released.
