Coaching Rumors: Baggett, Prohm, Moton, Brown

Kevin Baggett from Rider, Steve Prohm from Murry State, and LeVelle Moton from NC Central are among the candidates to be George Mason’s next head coach per Jeff Goodman, while Adam Zagoria adds Albany’s Will Brown to the list.

Baggett, the reigning MAAC coach of the year, is a former James Madison assistant and has a 54-44 record in three seasons at New Jersey-based Rider, including CBI and CIT appearances. Goodman and others have reported that Baggett is also a candidate for the Fordham job.

Prohm, an Alabama alum and former Crimson Tide student manager, is widely rumored to be one of the favorites to replace Anthony Grant at Alabama, but he was born in Vienna, Va. With Murray State still alive in the NIT, anyone wishing to interview the 40-year-old coach may have to wait another couple weeks. Prohm is one of the hottest names on the coaching market, with a 104-28 record in 4 seasons.

Moton has emerged as the favorite for the UNC Charlotte job, but George Mason (and other schools) can probably offer him more than the 49ers, so it remains to be seen whether he will accept, or whether Charlotte will move on to another candidate. Moton is 107-53 in five years at NC Central, including a 28-win season and NCAA appearance in 2014.

Brown, the head man at Albany since 2001, has been to three straight NCAA tournaments and is 305-225 overall. Zagoria also names him as a candidate for Fordham.

There’s no way to know which of these names are relevant, and it’s entire possible the next coach won’t be from among any of the rumored candidates. But George Mason fans should take comfort that a much wider search is taking place than the one which occurred four years ago:

Anyone have thoughts on why Baggett is being considered? Seems an underwhelming candidate to me.
