All 3 of Coach Larranaga's initial Mason assistants have been fired from head coaching positions: Mike Gillian (Longwood), Bill Courtney (Cornell), & Derek Kellogg (UMass).

    http://www.umassathletics.com/news/2017/3/9/mbb-kellogg.aspx?path=mbball:

"AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford announced on Thursday that men's basketball head coach Derek Kellogg has been relieved of his duties."

Girls Sports Month: @ESPN anchor Dianna Russini got where she is because of soccer, determination https://shar.es/1Ux8EY @diannaESPN

"Soccer came really naturally to me, so I was better than most at 5 or 6, and people caught up to me, but I loved it so much. It wasn’t my best sport in high school; track was. I could have had a full scholarship to almost any DI program, but the coach at George Mason offered me the chance to come and try out, and I made the team and he found a place for me on the roster, to provide the New Jersey grit. He had all these Southern belles who played with such finesse and he needed someone who would throw their body in front of attacks to slow down the opponent. I think of that as my greatest accomplishment, walking on to a team and becoming a four-year starter. My coach was hard on me. In the spring time, offseason, he would be recruiting and in meetings, but he would take time almost every single day to go through drills with me on the field. I just wasn’t as naturally good as the other girls."

    http://popgates.com/tony-skinn-looks-back-at-improbable-george-mason-2006-final-four-run/

I had the pleasure of talking with Tony Skinn, the starting Guard on that team (and current Assistant Coach for Louisiana Tech), for a few minutes today. He reflected on the amazing run and took us down memory lane. It makes you wonder who the next George Mason will be.

Mike Steenstra: It wasn’t all that common for a CAA team to get an at-large bid that year. Did you guys think you were going to be in the tournament?

Tony: Obviously, it’s been eleven years and to try to just remember what everyone thought was tough. I just thought we had a really good year and I want to say that we were in the top 60 in the RPI. We were one of the best teams in the country defensively but we had also had a match-up against Wichita State which at the time was called the “BracketBusters” game. It was kind of like the battle of the mid-majors. At the time we were doing well and so was Wichita so us playing them and going on the road to win there was a pretty good inclination of what was to come and put us in the top-25. Winning that game was huge for us. We thought we had a pretty good chance and got in.

Just looking at almost patriots and ex pats:

Trey Porter had a good sophomore year, avg 14 min/game 6.6ppg 4.8 rbpg

I think Therence Mayimba is focusing on his music. He is no longer listed and on the NW FL ST roster. Feel bad for that guy.

Eric Lockett averaged 5.1 ppg in 25.6 minutes in his sophomore season for FIU.

Isaiah Jackson had a good sophomore season as a sixth man for providence. 16.5 min, 5.6 ppg but went 1-5 in 13 min vs USC in the first 4 loss.

Devin Wilson, a near commit years back, decided to try out Virginia Tech football for his senior season. He had 2 catches all year. For basketball, he saw zero minutes this year and may have redshirted in order to play one more year. He only avg 2 ppg in 20 mpg in 2015-2016.

Ahmad Gilbert, who verbaled to Mason but jumped ship after the Hewitt firing, averaged 5 mpg with 1.7 ppg in his sophomore season.

If you're deciding between a power 5 school or a higher tiered mid major, it may be best to get that early playing time on the mid-major to prove your value. But players that excelled in HS are always overly confident of their abilities and think they can beat out other top recruits. If you don't, you may just ride the bench for 4 years on a P5 team and never get your chance.

    http://gopack.com/news/2017/3/27/mens-basketball-james-johnson-hired-as-assistant-coach.aspx:

"RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State has hired James Johnson as an assistant coach for the men's basketball program, head coach Kevin Keatts announced on Monday.

No stranger to each other, Johnson and Keatts were teammates for two seasons at Ferrum College in Ferrum, Va., from 1991-93."

"Johnson joined Virginia Tech after two seasons with Larranaga at George Mason. The Patriots went a combined 45-23 in his two seasons and advanced to the 2006 NCAA Final Four before falling to eventual national champion Florida."

Talk about someone who would have been a perfect stretch 4 in Paulsen's system.

    http://www.alexandrianews.org/2017/02/six-legends-inducted-into-athletic-hall-of-fame/:

"Alexandria City Public Schools inducted five outstanding athletes into the Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 10 . . ."

"Jimmy Lewis was the first African American to receive a full basketball scholarship to West Virginia University. Lewis made the All-State team after leading Parker-Gray High School to the runners-up position in the 1963 Virginia State basketball championships. Lewis was the first African-American Men’s Basketball Coach at Duke University in 1971, first head coach of the Washington Mystics in the Women’s National Basketball Association and the coach with the highest number of wins for either men’s or women’s basketball at George Mason University. At the national level, Lewis was a member of the coaching staff for four U.S. National Basketball teams that between them won three gold medals and one silver medal. Lewis returned to Alexandria to coach the T. C. Williams girls’ basketball team in 2007."

Coach Lewis was a class act. He built the women's team into a very competitive squad. Unfortunately, he just could get the team to the tournament.
