Just had some conversations with folks at Mason and it looks like the Apartments are going away to be replaced by a plaza/green space.

Given Tom has "christened" much of that place in his youth.

An era may be coming to an end.

That place was such a shithole. All the furniture was like 2 inches off the ground and the whole place had a prison feel. Mason needs more green space anyways.

For those of you not old enough to remember Patriot Village.....

In all seriousness though - had some great times there

My first night at Mason was spent pregaming in the apt's.

In the future, we'll pour one out when we walk past.

I lived in the PV's. Other than being cold as shit in the winter, the PV's were the shit! Completely unsupervised out there.

Kind of bittersweet to see old parts of campus slowly get torn down and replaced.

The apartments hold some great memories for me, lots of parties. The apartments during Mason days on the quad were the best, before they got all strict.

Which was ironically because of the parties in the apartments, haha.

I have a vivid memory of an undercover cop (white guy in mid 30's) walking around the apartments in a tshirt with a pot leaf trying to blend in. Dude was beyond obvious.

We lived on the third floor in the apartments my jr and sr year. I think I can count on one hand the amount of times we locked the front door. smh

I always wondered how feasible it would be to have a part of a college campus built more like Rockville Town Center where there 3 or 4 streets closed to car traffic, ground level is dedicated to retail and above floors dedicated to student housing; some of the building would all be dedicated to academics. Mason is a young enough campus where we could pull something like this off seeing that we don't have buildings that are 125 years old and evoke decades of tradition. we can just knock them down like they will the apartments.

Damn, so many memories and blackouts took place in those apartments. I lived on the second floor in Building 3, and we had 6 keg parties in a 3-year span.

One took place during a snowstorm right after we beat UNCW in overtime, and more than 70 people — including most of the basketball team — converged on my place because they couldn't leave campus. Needless to say, me and my roommates were put on probation for the rest of the semester.

Very similar experience on 3rd floor of Wilson during a huge snow storm - luckily when the party got busted I was either just returning from or getting ready to go outside, so I was dressed up in snow gear and said I was just going to shovel my car and hadn't been at the party - no probation for me!

GCU actually has done that. They say it is Downtown Disney inspired. But in a cheap way (GCU’s campus looks a bit like prefab structures). No lie, though, their dorms are really nice.

Ah, like GMUTomGMU said, what memories! I was also in building 3 when Tom was there. What a great few years.

Bonfires between buildings, Tequila nights, RAs that bought the kegs and hosted the parties, my roommate calling at various times throughout any given 24 hour period asking us to turn on or off the lights in his 'closet.' The memories could just go on.

Mercer University has also done that. It built student lofts on the edge of campus with retail (mostly restaurants) on the street level.

It is a great idea since downtown Fairfax is not close enough for students to walk to.

As time goes by - Mason's campus increasingly gets off the hook.
