Omaha, Neb. – The UMBC men's soccer team advanced to the NCAA College Cup, as the Retrievers advanced past No. 12 Creighton, 4-3 in penalty kicks, after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer.

UMBC red-shirt sophomore goalkeeper Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa.) saved the first penalty kick and after senior Mamadou Kansaye (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) converted, the Retrievers never trailed in the shoot-out. With the shoot-out tied at 3-3, senior forward Kay Banjo (Upper Marlboro, Md./Largo) beat CU netminder Connor Sparrow to the keeper's right, setting off a wild celebration by the unseeded Retrievers.

UMBC (14-5-5) will play the winner of the match between Virginia and Georgetown on Friday, Dec. 12 in Cary, N.C.

The Bluejays had a slight edge in possession time in the first half, but the Retrievers had the best attempt, as senior back Jordan Becker (Pocomoke, Md.) hit a rocket from 23 yards just a yard or so over the crossbar in the 25th minute. Creighton sent a through ball into dangerous territory with a minute remaining in the half, but Heavner came out aggressively and snuffed out the chance.

I'm surprised a few Mason players haven't broken into MLS. There we're a few I though had a shot recently -- Fro Adu and Sean Kelley come to mind. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Mulgrew, Eckenrode, Kraus and Hoffman in the next few years.

Some good returning players. Excited to see if Hoffmann can make a big impact as a junior. He was probably Masons most dangerous and exciting attacking player last year.

Despite a 2-1 victory over Rhode Island last night, the Patriots will not be playing in the A10 tourney at George Mason Stadium - see the following:

    http://www.atlantic10.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=31600&ATCLID=210479043:

"In an exciting final night of conference play, the George Washington Colonials defeated Saint Louis, 1-0, in double-overtime to clinch the regular season title and top seed in the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championship, which begins Thursday at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va."

"George Washington will take on the VCU Rams in the opening quarterfinal match on Thursday at 11:00 am. The Rams also needed a win on Saturday to qualify for the championship, scoring three goals in less than 10 minutes, including overtime, against A-10 leading Dayton. VCU, tied with George Mason in final points, earned the eight seed by virtue of a 2-1-1 record against common opponents."

FAIRFAX, Va. – For the second time this season, Ryan Mingachos netted two goals in one game.

On Monday, he was recognized for his most recent two-goal performance as the Atlantic 10 Conference Offensive Player of the Week. The midfielder scored twice in a 4-3 victory over Binghamton on Friday, including the game-winner in overtime.

Mingachos, a sophomore from Danbury, Conn., scored in the 98th minute from 15 yards out into the upper corner to lift the Patriots past Binghamton at George Mason Stadium. It was his second goal of the game as he scored in the 41st minute to give Mason a 2-1 halftime lead.
