Scouting the Patriots
George Mason enters the weekend ranked #22 by Soccer America and #23 by College Soccer News.
The Patriots opened the season on a 7-0-2 tear, but have gone 1-2-1 since the beginning of October.
Mason has outscored its opponents 22-9 this season, posting seven shutouts along the way.
Timi Mulgrew is the team's top offensive threat with 20 points on nine goals and a pair of assists. Dirks Henning (10p/4g/2a), Colton Amidon (8p/3g/2a) and Jannik Eckenrode (6p/2g/2a) also have scored multiple goals for the Patriots.
Steffen Kraus has played all but 12:58 between the posts for Mason this season. He is 8-2-3 with 48 saves and a 0.66 goals against average.
Final score: Rhode Island (7-3-3, 3-0-0 A10) 3 - Mason (8-3-3, 1-2-1 A10) 1
Final score: Mason (9-3-3, 2-2-1 A10) 1 - Fordham (5-7-2, 2-2-1 A10) 0
Last two home games of the season are coming up:
Sat, Oct 25 DAVIDSON *
Fairfax, Va. 7:00 p.m.
Fri, Oct 31 GEORGE WASHINGTON *--Fairfax, Va. 7:00 p.m.
Wildcats are 4-1 on the road and 7-1-3 overall (receiving votes like GMU).
GWU right now is 2-4 on the road and 5-6-1 overall.
Hopefully GMU has some good fan activities set up for both tilts to get fans out for these two important home games.
Has anyone heard anything about GK Steffen Kraus' injury?
These 2 tweets from Sunday sounded optimistic.
Kevin McNamee @kwmcnamee
Mason MSOC still up 1-0 and Steffen Kraus has returned to the bench walking. Good news.
Mason Men's Soccer @masonmsoc
@droe_Soccer Will know more in the morning after tests. Looking good right now though that he will return in a week or so! Fingers crossed!
Scouting Davidson College. First time these schools have played in regular season since 1996.
Final score: Mason 2 - Davidson 1 (OT). Timi Mulgrew had both of the Patriots' goals.
I hope Timi Mulgrew has an opportunity to play at the next level, even if it's at the NASL/USL Pro level...Richmond Kickers perhaps?
Twin bill tomorrow night for Senior Day.
Men host GWU.
Good luck gents. Rise in those standings!
Final score: Mason 1 - GW 0. Timi Mulgrew had the goal (his 13th of the season).
If I'm reading the standings correctly, it looks like a win against St. Joes would put us as the number two seed going into the tournament -- URI is 6-0 and is uncatchable by anyone.
Edit: Although looking at it, St. Louis has a game in hand and if they win their last two, they will have 1 more point than us and leap into second place. Their last two games are against URI at home and VCU on the road.
Sounding positive on the at-large chances:
'The George Mason men’s soccer team has increased its national ranking and now has a top-30 RPI according to the NCAA.
Mason entered the College Soccer New Top 30 last week at 27th and has been bumped up to 26th after its 1-0 defeat of George Washington on Friday. The Patriots are also receiving votes in the latest Top Drawer Soccer poll with one regular season game remaining. Mason has been receiving votes in the NSCAA Coaches poll for the past four weeks with new rankings due on Tuesday.'
I think we are a lock right now for NCAA at large, would like a win over St. Joe's and one win in A10 tourny to be absolutely sure (or just win the tournament again)
Any word on Kraus' health? Impossible to get any injury information on any non-basketball athlete
Mason at La Salle Sunday to draw season to a close.
'The Patriots come into Sunday fourth in the Atlantic 10 with a conference record of 4-2-1, behind Rhode Island, VCU and Saint Louis. '
With a 1-1 tie at LaSalle today, Mason will be the #4 seed in the A10 tournament - see http://www.gomason.com/ViewArticle....75&DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=209757817&DB_OEM_ID=25200.
The Patriots will face #5 Davidson in the quarterfinals.
''The Patriots draw #5 seeded Davidson in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Thursday, November 13 in Richmond, Va.. Mason defeated the Wildcats 2-1 in overtime on October 25. The full Atlantic 10 Tournament bracket will be released Sunday evening.''
Go mason ! At least pick up a win or two!
