This is one of the bigger things I’ve been disappointed with this season. I really thought calixte was a candidate to make a big jump this year. Offensively he’s gotten softer hands but defensively seems to have taken a half step back. Hoping he can get a little tougher on D during A10 play.
I never want to bash a player but there is a lot of truth in numbers. Greg Calixte. Freshman year 18.8 minutes per game, 4.9 points, 4.3 Reb. Sophomore year, 14.3 minutes per game, 4.6 points, 3.5 rebounds. Junior year, 17 minutes per game, 3.8 points, 3.4 rebounds. He really has not progressed/improved at all in his time at Mason. I want the best for him and the program but I am beginning to wonder.
greg is what he is. He essentially is going to work hard and grind, but you aren’t going to get a traditional big style playing him imo, if that makes sense. I think it’s good to have him on the team, and he’s a nice transition to Oduro who hopefully will be a bit more traditional.
One thing is true, this UMD team struggles to shoot the ball. They are solid defensively, though. I'd be surprised if they stayed top 10 once they start playing other Big 10 teams.
I can accept losing to a better team on their court. I have trouble stomaching lazy passes, numerous traveling calls and shot-clock violations. Gotta clean that stuff up before we get to conference play.
The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result. Turgeon made an adjustment early by going zone and we didnt handle it. We played the same thing all game long and got into foul trouble and allowed drives to the hoop all night. Maybe mix it up a bit and force them to make some outside shots. Hell, even the announcers keep talking about how they can't shoot from the outside. They are like 5-21 from behind the arc.
Pessimistic prediction was a 50 point loss. Optimistic prediction was a 10 point loss. Realistic prediction was a 20 point loss. Looks like we finish in between pessimistic and realistic. Sigh.
The fouling is what gets me. I get that they're bigger and more athletic than we are, but we've had players in foul trouble every single game this year. There are ways to counter bigger, more athletic teams and what we did tonight was not one of them. They scored 30 points from the charity stripe!
No one is happy with this besides you so you can feel good about being the only “true” fan of George Mason basketball. At least the people who are frustrated bring legitimate points and stats to the conversation even if they aren’t happy with the way we are playing. This whole schtick is way more annoying that the people who are doom and gloom.
Look, we were clearly over matched. I'm frustrated because we made zero adjustments on both sides of the ball. At least it didnt look like we made any. Also, did we really not call any timeouts other than the use-it-or-lose-it in the 1st half? Lets take our $70k and move on
False hope after the game is already decided? I don't know if Kier makes us 20+ points better, but I still think he would have made this a game (on both sides of the ball). AJ battled. He's going to be a nightmare for A-10 teams if he plays the way he played tonight.
I mean, we probably needed this game. Our lack of size in the backcourt and our lack of a legitimately sized center who can produce significantly were definitely on display. It's kind of hilarious that they shot poorly, especially from outside and still put up 86 points. Is what it is. Get Kier back, stay healthy, and get better.
