Individual stats for VMI have not been updated as of 3:30PM on 12/18/20. I'll get them done as soon as possible.

VMI is currently 5-3 on the season. All 5 wins have been at home against weak competition. Their three losses are on the road. Lost by 21 to Penn St., 7 to VA Tech, and 11 to Gardner Webb.

History: GMU is 1 - 1 all time against VMI. The last meeting was December 23, 2009, which Mason won 89-86.

Wins: St. Andrews, Longwood, Greensboro College, Hampton, Campbellsville-Harrodsburg
Losses: Penn State, Va Tech, Gardener Webb
    Canceled/Postponed: Regent, Mercer

    Schedule: https://vmikeydets.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule
    Roster: https://vmikeydets.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster
    Stats: https://s3.amazonaws.com/vmikeydets.com/documents/2020/12/15/vmi_bkb_stats_2020_21.pdf

    VMI is led by 6’4” Greg Parham (15.6 ppg & 3.0 reb), 6’1’ Kaymdyn Curfman (12.7 ppg & 2.0 reb), 6’5” Myles Lewis (11.7 ppg & 8.6 reb), and 6’5” Sean Conway (9.4 ppg & 4.7 reb). 6’10” Jake Stephens (8.7 ppg & 6.0 reb) rounds out the starting 5.

VMI averages 83.0 points per game while giving up 69.3. The Keydets shoot 48.4% from the floor and 38.0% from 3. Opponents are shooting 38.9% from the field and 31.1% from 3. They shoot 79.6% from the free throw line. VMI out rebounds by their opponents by 7 boards per game.

    The game is on ESPN+.

My prediction: This should shape up to be a battle of the 3’s. The Keydets shoot the 3 an average of 30.4 times per game. We take 27 3’s per game.

It will be interesting to see how we play after the Covid break. We weren’t exactly setting the world on fire before play paused. Additionally, we have to deal with 3 handicaps. 1. It’s a home game and we aren’t exactly world beaters at EBA under DP. 2. Covid layoff for us while they have remained active. 3. Will the real AJ show up?

The optimist in me says GMU manages to win a close one 75 - 74. The pessimist says we allow the Keydets to shoot 20 - 40 from 3 and lose by 10.

VMI is really bad and this should be nothing more than a warmup game. Mason will struggle at times but ultimately get the W as they should.

The series is even 1-1. Mason lost at VMI during the 1979-80 season - https://vmikeydets.com/news/2020/12...ball-to-play-at-george-mason-december-21.aspx:

"The contest will mark the first time since the 2009-10 season that VMI has played George Mason in basketball. In the last meeting between the teams, VMI fell 89-86 in Fairfax on December 22, 2009.
This will be only the third time the teams have met in basketball. VMI won the initial meeting in Lexington, 95-81 on January 24, 1980 at the famed 'Pit'."

I also don't truly understand why we did such a long quarantine.... but we certainly didn't duck Coppin St...that is Paulsen's wet dream opponent. Can't play a game one day after not practicing for over 2 weeks

I suppose GMU is better than GW this year. Return the favor and sweep them this year please, so we know you are.

Since GMU hasn't played in a bit, I can actually see this one going to overtime.

If you're going to the game you'll notice your ticket indicates you should enter either the North or South entrance, whichever is closer to your seats. This is just a suggestion, not a requirement. Based on my experience attending a few Women's game, the only concession stand open is the one across from Portal 3 on the South concourse. I suggest parking near the South entrance (lot A) and entering there even if your tickets are on the North side. I get they're trying to limit concourse traffic, but parking in lot L just to enter the North and then walk around to the concession stand on the other side of the Dome doesn't make sense.

I also suggest patronizing the concession stand even if just to buy something to drink. They have a limited food menu, but I try to support them. I'm sure they're losing money being open for the Women's game. I counted less the 40 fans in attendance at yesterday's game.

Bottom line, park in lot A, enter the south entrance, and support the concessions folks.

The average age in the pat dome for these first five games is going to be like 78, including the children and players.
