Using "role player" as an insult undermines the confidence of role players, chipping away at their psyche and reinforcing the nonsense that they are “different” in an inferior, unnatural way. It makes them feel like outsiders. And until people stop repurposing the word as an insult, then this will persist.

So it is your fault that we only have role players.

From today’s Dick Patrick article. Paulsen was quoted about the Davidson loss:

"I was as down as could be when I left here (Sunday)," he said. "Then you watch the film and think we're not that far away."

Did anyone else feel that the team is not that far away?

I did, not sure what to think of it. Team confidence with this young team has to be fragile so what else could he have said.

It's almost as if we're watching a talented but incredibly young team learn and grow. Hmmm....if only the coach mentioned before the season how he thought they would perform...

I'm still not sure why some of the lower IQ posters are melting down lately. Any mentally stable genius knew the season would have a lot of ups and downs. Enjoy the win and try to grow back your fingernails before the weekend. Onward.

I think you completely missed the point of the post. Just thought it was a little funny after what has been described as one of the worst performances of the year that he analyzed the performance and came to the conclusion we looked like we are just this close.

So you didn’t find the statement that a little funny, off or ironic. Not comparing his coaching to the previous guy in his position, but that is the type of thing that the former coach would have said and infuriated people on here.

Probably just typical coach speak, which is about as bad as politicians, but I liked the hire in part as he seemed to be a straight shooter, not a BS artist.

gmubrian: I'm just being a smartass because I really have nothing of value to add since the season has been so crazy-- no animosity directed toward you at all.

The only thing I can really say with certainty is that this team is located somwhere on the spectrum between dumpster fire and a maddening work in progress...

I feel confident in saying that Dave can and does see things in the film that average fans wouldn’t recognize or understand, so I don’t know that it’s necessarily BS or coach-speak when he says we’re not that far off.

At the same time, anyone with a reasonable amount of knowledge about basketball could watch our games when Hewitt was coach and see the program was clearly in a downward spiral.

Despite several games this season that have snowballed and gotten away from our guys, I would take issue with anyone who doesn’t think our staff has things moving in the right direction overall.

Whether it’s occurring quickly enough is a matter of opinion.

    Jim,

You are usually one of my favorite posters to read, but, as of late, you seem to have a knee jerk reaction to over defend every aspect of Dave “can do no wrong” Paulsen at the slightest hint of a criticism.

First, nowhere did I say the team wasn’t headed in the right direction. On the contrary, I believe I have only posted that Paulsen still has my confidence. Regardless, of whether he can see things that the rest of us can’t, saying that line after that game just doesn’t sound right. Maybe he was just being genuine about his feelings but, it just sounded odd to someone like me. At this point, being only the most casual of Mason fans, I can provide a fairly unbiased viewpoint towards Paulsen. Your over the top/over sensitive responses show how biased you are.

Second, anyone who brings up the roster mess we are currently in (albeit hopefully a temporary thing this year) gets dog piled on here. I understand that it gets old after a while, likely because it is true and hints at hidden fears in the Paulsen can do no wrong crowd that they don’t want to acknowledge. So, I saw what I thought would be a good tidbit for some back and forth discussion about Paulsen that did not include the current state of the roster.

Fine, I get it, you love Paulsen, he can do no wrong and him saying we appear to be so close after a game that was almost unanimously viewed as the teams worst performance of the year doesn’t strike you as being a little bit on the ironic or funny side.

To use your style of over the top defense, anyone with a reasonable sense of reality should have raised their eyebrows a little bit in disbelief at that comment. But, I guess for me to say that would blasphemy, and against the unwritten rules of the boards these days, so I won’t say that. ;-)

Sorry for the interruption. Feel free to get back to discussing every way in which Paulsen is an infallible god. Enjoy discussing things with only people who see Paulsen in that fashion.

How is that for an over the top/over sensitive reply?

    Brian,

I have a ton of respect for you as somebody who has donated more and done more to support our program than the vast majority of our fan base. You have put your money where your mouth is and your opinion carries weight.

If I’m too exuberant in my defense of our coach, it’s only because I’m sick of the trolls who attack him on our board at the slightest opportunity and crush him for things (transfers?) that he might not have had ability to do anything about. You’d think this was a VCU board with all the negativity toward Dave.

That said, I don’t think he’s infallible. In the future, I would prefer that he err on the side of over-signing rather than get stuck with such a shorthanded roster. Even if it’s borderline ethically to offer more scholarships than you have available, at least we’d be prepared if 1-2 guys decide to transfer late again.

I also hope that he makes better use of the grad transfer market to fill specific immediate needs in future years instead of relying on freshmen to perform at a level for which they are not yet capable.

If by the end of next season the program is not showing clearly that it has turned the corner toward roster stability and being a consistent A-10 contender, Dave will have to be accountable for that.

I think the guy is a really good coach who inherited a bad situation. Others obviously disagree. We’ll eventually find out who is right.

As an aside to all the jerking off of DP going on here, that is my absolute favorite comedy and that is one of the funniest scenes.

That show really hits close to home on some of the episodes (not the one presented above...). One of my companies got brain raped by one of the big companies I was pitching my software to. Then, the ups and downs of being, literally, hours away from a huge sale of the company on multiple occasions just to have a random event derail it. Watching that show is a form of therapy at times. I guess misery really does love company...
