This. So many people get hung up on the idea that those things have to be mutually exclusive. They don’t, 95% of winning programs have good kids and good basketball players.

This is why theres part of me that as much as I bought into "Brad wants to win", theres still a part of me that too many folks involved in the program just want a team of nice kids who graduate. This all goes back to my original thoughts on that perhaps nobody is in a hurry to get rid of Dave because of status quo, general improvement etc. All topics we've beaten/continue to beat to death.

I want nice kids who graduate, but most importantly I want real wins and NCAA appearances.

Lol my second favorite argument. Now that we’ve dumped a million dollars into a dedicated practice facility and new locker rooms we are able to compete with *checks list* the Patriot league and CAA for recruits.

It seems to me that Paulsen's recruiting philosophy was off when he got here. Stepping up in competition, he didn't change the types of players he was recruiting or how he was recruiting them. A similar thing happened to Coach L right after the final four run (he admitted he was too conservative in his approach going after mostly players he knew he could get).

Paulsen seemed to recognize he needed to change his recruitment strategy after losing to St. Bonaventure last year in the tournament, and it seems we brought in bigger and more athletic kids in this latest recruiting class. He will get one year as a test run to see if he can win with what he's got.

Im honestly surprised that when Brad came in he didn’t bring more of his own people with him. Like it or not, a lot of the old guard is still around in the AD and it becomes more apparent every year. Seemed like Brads first year or two that was changing but it seems to have stalled.

In all fairness I do agree with your sentiment here. That was the first time I’ve heard Paulsen admit to a fault, and this year is his year to show if he’s correcting it or not.

If you look at donations to programs who are above us, they are 100% (URI, UMass)-500% (VCU, Dayton) higher at those programs than they are here.

What about the other 75% of the conference that is spending similarly to us? Is GW building a new sex dungeon in foggy bottom that I’m unaware of?

We are near the bottom in basketball spending. But knowing what the private schools are doing is always hard because they don't have to report in the same way state universities do. But I would say we're on par with the teams around us who spend similar to us -- GW, La Salle, St. Joes with a few exceptions -- Davidson and St. Bonaventure outpunch their budgets, and Fordham seriously is spending way too much for what they're getting (that is 8th-14th in spending).

Really good point and he hinted to it. I think the recruiting strategy was also off but it drastically has improved the last 2-3 years with Miller, Hartwell, XJ etc.

That said its nice hes improved it, but its not like the wins have piled up to where we would all like as things have improved.

I enjoyed that, agree I wish the AD pushed out more content and made coaches/players more accessible through prescreened question/interview situations like that. It gives the fans a lot more to talk about/share, gives people who pay more attention to the program a little more insight into why they are doing what they are doing, and ultimately makes it a little harder to completely dislike the coaching staff. Would love to see more interviews with both coaches and players and when it starts back up, some practice film so we can see just how great all these practices are going.
Brad Edwards needs to do an interview of his own to give state of the program/state of the AD and Mason athletics moving forward, and I think it would be a great idea post corona to organize a charity dinner/Q&A at a local restaurant to get fans more involved with the program/staff while raising money for a local cause.

Yes, in 2020 if the media ignores you, you have to find ways to talk around the media. Right now, if we want to know anything about Mason athletics, we have By George, GMUHoops and the AD and that’s pretty much it.

As someone who pushed hard for a Q & A/Dave answering questions? It's nice they listened in a way by doing this.
