As suspected by many after rumors were posted Monday, Mason Assistant Coach Mike Wells is leaving the program for the same position at the University of South Florida.  Masonhoops was able to confirm the news via the Tampa Bay Times USF blog earlier today, soon followed by the official release from USF.

Wells was not one of the primary recruiters at Mason, so it will be interesting to see who is brought in as a replacement and what skills they bring with them.  Many are hoping for someone with a tie-in to one of the regional AAU powerhouses.

Wells, 42, spent the last two seasons as an assistant on Paul Hewitt’s staff at George Mason, but he spent 17 seasons in the NBA, working with two NBA champions in the 1995 Houston Rockets and 2007 San Antonio Spurs. He spent 10 seasons in Houston, moving up from assistant video coordinator to assistant coach, then spent time with the Lakers, Spurs and Wizards.
