A-10 Expands Basketball Championship Tournament

Atlantic_10_conference-logoThe Atlantic 10 announced tonight that the members voted unanimously to expand from the top 12 teams to all teams for the 2014 conference tournament.  This move isn’t any surprise, considering there would be 13 teams participating in 2014 and 14 teams in 2015 (assuming no other schools leave).   Along with the tourney expansion, we learned that an 18-game conference schedule has been approved starting in 2014-2015, and that NBC Sports Network will carry 25 national games – although it’s not immediately clear if that includes or is added to what games ESPN and CBS Sports will carry.

From the press release:

The Athletic Directors approved an 18-game conference schedule for men’s basketball beginning in 2014-15. The scheduling model will allow for more conference contests, the continuation of rivalries and the opportunity to enhance the marketing and branding for the A-10.

The league received updates and reports from its two existing television partners (ESPN and CBS Sports Network) and from its new national television partner NBC Sports Network, which will carry 25 national A-10 games as part of the 2013-14 season. The league, in conjunction with all three partners, expanded its television package with an agreement last fall that goes into effect in the upcoming season.

This was the first A10 meeting that Mason attended as a represented member of the conference.
